FINITE ELEMENT RESOLUTION OF CONVECTION-DIFFUSION EQUATIONS WITH INTERIOR AND BOUNDARY LAYERS

We present a new algorithm for the resolution of both interior and boundary layers present in the convection-diffusion equation in laminar regimes, based on the formulation of a family of polynomial-exponential elements. We have carried out an adaptation of the standard variational methods (finite element method and spectral element method), obtaining an algorithm which supplies non-oscillatory and accurate solutions. The algorithm consists of generating a coupled grid of polynomial standard elements and polynomial-exponential elements. The latter are able to represent the high gradients of the solution, while the standard elements represent the solution in the areas of smooth variation.

Abstract Predicting scattering of elastic guided waves in multi-layered solid plates with geometrical and/or material discontinuities is of great interest to many fields, including ultrasonic-based Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and health monitoring of critical structural components (SHM). A four-node MITC finite element for magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates

An isoparametric four-node finite element for multilayered magneto-electro-elastic plates analysis is presented. It is based on an equivalent single-layer model, which assumes the first order shear deformation theory and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields. First, the electro-magnetic state of the plate is determined in terms of the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements, by solving the strong form of the magneto-electric governing equations coupled with the electro-magnetic interface continuity conditions and the external boundary conditions. Finite Element Method Analysis of a Spur Gear with a Corrected Profile

The difference between the stress value calculated by a two-dimensional finite element model of spur gears and those obtained by the rules in ISO 6336 was evaluated. Hertz theory, which provides information on the extension of the contact area and the maximum value of the contact pressure, was used to choose the dimensions of the elements. The mesh was created using the stress analytical solution relative to a model consisting of two cylinders in contact. Functional A Posteriori Error Estimates for Time-Periodic Parabolic Optimal Control Problems

This article is devoted to the a posteriori error analysis of multiharmonic finite element approximations to distributed optimal control problems with time-periodic state equations of parabolic type. We derive a posteriori estimates of the functional type, which are easily computable and provide guaranteed upper bounds for the state and co-state errors as well as for the cost functional. These theoretical results are confirmed by several numerical tests that show high efficiency of the a posteriori error bounds. peerReviewed

A nonconforming mixed finite element method is presented for approximation of ?w with Δw=f,w| r =0. Convergence of the order $$\left\| {\nabla w - u_h } \right\|_{0,\Omega } = \mathcal{O}(h^2 )$$ is proved, when linear finite elements are used. Only the standard regularity assumption on triangulations is needed.
